At Captain Moe’s Lucky Fleet, sailfishing is one of our trademark fishing charters. Sailfish are one of the most exciting types of fish to catch. It’s no wonder that each year, we see a great number of anglers flocking to the Sunshine State to try their hand at sailfishing Key West style.
Sailfish are beautiful, natural acrobats and will jump many times in an attempt to throw the hook. Averaging between 30 and 60 lbs, sailfish are thought to be one of the fastest fishes around and can swim up to 68 miles per hour! You can bet the second you hook a sailfish, you will be in for an impressive fight.
Spotting a Sailfish
Sailfish, a highly prized game fish here in Key West, are typically blue to gray in color with white underbellies. With their long pointy bills, sailfish range in size from about 5 to 11 feet and can weigh up to 220 lbs.
Sailfish are unique in that their stunning dorsal fins appear to resemble sails on a ship. These “sails” stay down when the fish is going about its normal business, but the second it gets excited or feels threatened, the sailfish raises its fin like an alarm. That’s when you know it’s on!
What’s the Best Time to go on a Sailfishing Key West Trip?
You can go sailfishing any time during the year, but the wintertime is when they are most abundant. (Yes, we do have winter in Key West, though it tends to run a bit warmer than most of the places people travel from.) November kicks off sailfish season in Key West, though the peak of the season picks up around January and tapers off around April.
